Description:
Direct bilirubin is a yellow compound produced by the breakdown of red blood cells in the blood. It is derived from the breakdown of heme and is metabolized in the liver before being excreted into bile and ultimately eliminated from the body through the intestines. Direct bilirubin is poorly soluble in blood and therefore binds to plasma proteins, undergoing conversion to indirect bilirubin within the liver.
