- Description
- The Wild Bactrian camels (Camelus ferus) have tall and thin body, with height at 2.2-3.5 m, tail length at 50-60 cm, shoulder height at 1.8-2.0 m, and with body weight of 450-708 kg. They have short head, short mouth and hare lip. There are valves in theiose to ensure the smooth breathing, as well as preventing sands into the nostrils. The ears are small and round in which dense hairs can stop the sand, and put the ear shell tightly folded up. There are two layers of thick eyelashes, and with double-fold eyelid, both eyes can be individually opened and closed. The neck is long and curved like gooseneck. The hairs on the back can protect the skin and keep out of the sunlight. The tail is short and with short hairs. There were two humps on the back, which are with round base and taper head, and shaped as conical. The hair of the hump-heat is short and sparse and without vertical hair. The limbs of wild Bactrian camels are different from other ungulate animals. The third and forth toe are particularly well-developed, and has a big split between them and shaped as “Y” type, and the toes have hoof nail. There are sponge-like callus cushion to increase the area of touching ground, thus to possible to walk in the soft sand without sinking, and to prevent the toes from being injured in the scorching summer and cold winter. The skin thickening of chest, front-knee elbow and hind-knee are formed seven horny pads with characteristics of wear-resistance, heat insulation and heat preservation to let them rest on the sand.
