Gr. adj. <i>thermos</i>, hot; Gr. masc. n. <i>lithos</i>, stone; N. L. <i>bacter</i> masc. equivalent of Gr. neut. n. <i>baktron</i>, rod staff; suff. -<i>ia</i>, ending proposed by Gibbons and Murray (1978) to denote a class; N. L. neut. pl. n. <i>Thermolithobacteria</i>, thermophilic, lithotrophically growing rods.

Class of the 'Firmicutes'. Segregation of these organisms is warranted by: their distinct phylogenetic lineage within the 'Firmicutes', and their obligate, or preferred, chemolithotrophic growth. Description is the same as that of the genus.
