Streptomycetaceae Waksman and Henrici 1943 (Approved Lists 1980)
General information
Description and emendation
Actinomycetes with branched slender mycelium, rarely or not septate, forming spores on aerial hyphae, not fragmenting into oidia. There are two genera, Streptomyces and Micromonospora.
1: The family is emended to exclude the genus Sporichthya. The pattern of 16S rDNA signature nucleotides consists of 71 (G), 80-89 (G-C), 81-88 (C-G), 82-87 (U-G), 127-234 (G-C), 209 (C), 210 (C), 211 (G), 610 (G), 671-735 (U-A), 819 (G), 837-849 (C-G), 950-1231 (U-G), 955-1225 (C-G), 965 (C), 1254-1283 (A-U), and 1409-1491 (C-G). The family contains the type genus Streptomyces.
2: The family contains the type genus Streptomyces, as well as the genera Kitasatospora and Streptacidiphilus. The pattern of 16S rRNA signatures consists of nucleotides at positions 127:234 (G–C), 449 (A), 672:734 (C–G), 950:1231 (U–G), 952:1229 (U–A), 955:1225 (C–G), 965 (C), 986:1219 (A–U) and 1362 (C).
3: The pattern of 16S rRNA signatures consist of nucleotides at position 234 (C), 449 (A), 672:734 (C-G), 950:1231 (U-G), 952:1229 (U-A), 955:1225 (C-G), 965 (C), 986:1219 (A-U) and 1362 (C). Whole-organism sugar profiles may contain major amounts of galactose (Kitasatospora), galactose and rhamnose (Streptacidiphilus) or galactose and mannose (Allostreptomyces). The G+C content of the DNA is generally between 66 and 75 mol%. The type genus is Streptomyces.
4: The family encompasses aerobic, Gram-stain-positive, non-acid-alcohol-fast, non-motile organisms that form a stable, extensively branched substrate mycelium and aerial hyphae that differentiate into two to many spores. Short chains of spores may be observed on substrate hyphae. Most strains produce a wide range of pigments which are responsible for the color of substrate and aerial mycelia. Strains are generally chemoautotrophic and mesophilic but some are autotrophic and thermophilic. The peptidoglycan of the substrate mycelium contains either LL-or DL-A2pm as the predominant diamino acid, aerial hyphae and submerged spores have LL-A2pm; the peptidoglycan type is A3α. The predominant isoprenologues are typically MK-9(H6, H8), common polar lipids are DPG and PIMs though PE and PI also occur; fatty acids are rich in saturated and iso- and anteiso-compounds. The G+C content is around 65–75%.
