Includes spore-formers exhibiting Gram-positive, rod-shaped cells with anaerobic chemoorganotrophic, primarily proteolytic metabolism. Mesophilic or thermophilic. Truly alkaliphilic. Capable of reduction of fumarate, DMSO, thiosulfate, and sulfur. The DNA G+C content is around 32 mol%. Belongs to the order Clostridiales within the class Clostridia of the phylum Firmicutes.
