Cells are Gram-staining and Gram-type-positive; endospores are not observed. Straight or slightly curved, slender rods. Non-motile. Strictly anaerobic. Members are halophilic and alkaliphilic. Chemolitho- or organoheterotrophic. Phylogenetically, the family belongs to the order Natranaerobiales.
