Cells are Gram-positive, non-motile, form multi-locular sporangia, most form thick-walled vesicles, fix nitrogen and establish root nodules on actinorhizal plants. A member of the class Actinobacteria . Contains a single family, Frankiaceae. The type genus is Frankia. The name of the order including families Frankiaceae, Geodermatophilaceae, Nakamurellaceae, Sporichthyaceae, Acidothermaceae and Cryptosporangiaceae.
