Original Description

The phylum Fibrobacteres is another lineage currently represented by a single genus, Fibrobacter, and was first proposed as such by Montgomery et al. (1988). The Fibrobacteres tend to branch in the general region of the Spirochaetes and Chlamydiae in the ARB and RDP trees. In PCA plots, we find them mapping to a similar location. Gram-negative, obligately anaerobic, nonsporulating, rod-shaped or pleiomorphic Bacteria. Capnophilic. Chemoorganotrophic heterotrophs. Associated with the digestive tracts of various herbivorous mammals.
