Strictly anaerobic, motile rods. Gram-stain-negative. Chemoorganotroph and fermentative. Does not utilize carbohydrates. Grows well in PY medium. Utilizes amino acids and produces volatile fatty acids. Oxidase and catalase activities are negative. Compounds related to iso-C15:0 (fatty acid, DMA or aldehyde) are major components of cellular fatty acids. The cell-wall peptidoglycan contains meso-diaminopimelic acid as the diagnostic amino acid. Does not have any respiratory quinones.
