Cells are strictly anaerobic, rod-shaped and do not produce spores. Gram reaction is negative. Utilizes carbohydrates, and the major fermentation products from glucose or starch are ethanol, CO2, formate and acetate. Major fatty acids are summed feature 3 containing C16:1 ω7c and/or C16:1 ω6c and C16:0 ALDE. Respiratory quinones are not detected. The DNA G+C content of the type species is 45.5 mol%.
