General information
Description and emendation
Cells straight rods, 0.8-1 μm × 5-8 μm. Motile by polar or subpolar flagella. Cells form motile bundles of a few to up to hundreds of cells. Cells lack intracytoplasmic membranes or chlorosomes. Metabolism obligately anaerobic. Heat-resistant endospores produced in newly isolated cultures. Cells contain bacteriochlorophyll g and grow photoheterotrophically on pyruvate, lactate, acetate (plus CO2), or butyrate (plus CO2), and chemotrophically by pyruvate fermentation. Utilizable nitrogen sources include ammonia, glutamine, and N2. Absorption maxima of intact anoxic cells occur at 792, 480, and 415 nm. Optimal growth temperature 37-40°C, and optimal pH near 7. Capable of assimilatory sulfate reduction. Growth inhibited by sulfide above 0.1 mM. Biotin required. NaCl not required, and growth inhibited above 1% NaCl. DNA base composition, 51.8% mol% G+C.
