Cells forming coils or bent filaments of variable length up to 20 μm. Stain gram-negative but lack an outer membrane. Motile by flagellar means. Anoxygenic phototroph. Contains bacteriochlorophyll g and neurosporene-like carotenoid pigments, but lacks intracytoplasmic membranes or chlorosomes. Alkaliphilic and mesophilic. Obligate anaerobe; grows photoheterotrophically. Habitat: alkaline soils or soda lakes.
