Gram-negative, straight or curved rods, usually single but sometimes in chains; thermophilic types often show lenticulate and otherwise swollen forms. Terminal or subterminal sporulation, slightly swelling the cells. Motile, with peritrichous flagella. Obligate anaerobes with reduce sulfate to sulfide; species show cross antigenicity by agglutination and immunodiffusion tests. Found in fresh water, soils, geothermal regions, certain spoiled food, intestines of insects, and in rumen contents of ruminant mammals.
