Desulfosporosinus Stackebrandt et al. 1997
General information
Description and emendation
Gram-negative, curved rod that has a multilayered cell wall structure. Endospores are produced; they are oval and subterminal and slightly swell the cells. Motile, with peritrichous flagella. Strictly anaerobic. Desulfoviridin and cytochrome c3 are absent; bisulfite reductase P582 is present. Sulfate and thiosulfate are reduced to sulfide in the presence of lactate or pyruvate but not in the presence of acetate or fructose. Incomplete oxidation of organic comounds to acetate occurs. Autototrophic growth occurs with hydrogen plus sulfate. Homoacetogenic growth occurs with methanol and ethanol. Contains a menaquinone with a side chain having seven isoprene units (MK-7 type). The predominant fatty acids are even-numbered, saturated fatty acids (about 35% of the total fatty acids), unsaturated fatty acids (about 50%), and aldehydes (about 15%); iso- and anteiso-branched fatty acids and cyclopropane fatty acids are absent. The G+C content of the DNA is 44.7 to 45.9 mol%.
1: Gram-negative, curved rods that have a multilayered cell wall structure. Endospores are produced; they are oval and subterminal and cause the cells to swell slightly. Motile, with lateral or peritrichous flagella. Strictly anaerobic. Growth occurs between 10 and 37°C. Desulfoviridin and cytochrome c6 are absent; bisulfite reductase P8A5 is present. Sulfate and thiosulfate are reduced to sulfide in the presence of lactate, pyruvate and other carbon sources and electron donors. Incomplete oxidation of organic compounds to acetate occurs. Fumarate is sometimes used as a carbon and energy source for sulfate reduction. Nitrate is sometimes reduced to nitrite. Autotrophic growth occurs with hydrogen plus sulfate. Homoacetogenic growth occurs with ethanol and sometimes with methanol. Contains a menaquinone with a side-chain having seven isoprene units (MK-7 type). The predominant fatty acids are even-numbered, saturated and unsaturated fatty acids, and minor amounts of branched chain and cyclopropane fatty acids may occur. The G+C content of the DNA is 44.7-46.9 mol%.
2: Gram-negative rods that have a multi-layered cell wall structure. Endospores present, oval and subterminal to (almost) terminal, causing the cells to swell slightly. Non-motile or motile with lateral or peritrichous flagella. Strictly anaerobic. If determined, desulfoviridin and cytochrome c3 absent and bisulfite reductase P582 present. Sulfate and thiosulfate are reduced to sulfide in the presence of lactate but not in the presence of acetate or fructose. Incomplete oxidation of organic compounds to acetate. Acetate is the fermentation end-product; capable of homoacetogenic growth. Grows autotrophically with hydrogen plus sulfate. LL-Diaminopimelic acid is the diagnostic diamino acid of peptidoglycan. Contains menaquinone with a side-chain with seven isoprene units (MK-7 type). Predominant fatty acids are even-numbered, saturated and unsaturated fatty acids; significant amounts of 1,1-dimethylacetals have been found in Desulfosporosinus auripigmenti; traces of iso- and anteiso-branched-chain fatty acids and cyclopropane fatty acids may occur. The G+C content of the DNA is 41.6-45.9 mol%.
3: The genus also includes species that do not oxidize hydrogen with CO2 or acetate as carbon source.
