Emendation
Emendation 1
1: Cells are Gram-stain-positive, coccoid, obligately anaerobic, non-sporing, non-motile, 0.3–1.4 µm in diameter and occur mostly singly, in pairs and in irregular masses. Members of the genus are chemoorganoheterotrophic, mesophilic, asaccharolytic and require complex media for growth. Sulfite, thiosulfate and elemental sulfur, but not nitrate, sulfate and Fe 3+ are used as terminal electron acceptors. Most strains are catalase-positive and produce hydrogen sulfide. The main metabolic end-products are acetic and butyric acids. The major menaquinone is MK-10. Cellular fatty acids composition varies significantly between species.
