Cells are Gram-stain-positive, obligately anaerobic, spore-forming or non-spore-forming, non-motile, non-pigmented rods found as in chains or pairs. Colonies on EG agar plates after 4-day incubation at 37°C under anaerobic conditions are 1 to 3 mm in diameter, white to ivory, circular, entire, slightly convex and smooth. Saccharolytic. The major end product from D-glucose is acetic acid, CO2 and H2. Growth occurs on medium containing 20% (w/v) bile. Cell-wall peptidoglycan contains meso-diaminopimelic acid (meso-DAP) as the diagnostic diamino acid. Predominant cellular fatty acids are C18:1 ω9c DMA, C18:1 ω9c and C16:0. The major polar lipids are DPG, PE, unknown phospholipids and unknown lipids. No respiratory quinones are detected.
