Cells are rod-shaped, occur singly, in pairs or in chains, and stain Gram-positive. No spores are formed and the cells are non-motile. Growth is strictly anaerobic. Growth is by degradation of a limited range of aromatic compounds and crotonate but not carbohydrates, organic acids or alcohols.
