Rod-shaped Gram-negative bacteria with pointed ends. Endospores not formed. Chemoorganotrophic fermentative metabolism. Amino acids major energy sources. Acetate major fermentation product. Lactate, succinate, butyrate and ethanol not formed. Growth on many substrates stimulated by or dependent on the presence of hydrogen-utilizing bacteria. Strictly anaerobic. Mesophilic.
