Strictly anaerobic bacilli. Cells are Gram-variable after staining. Motility is variable. Spores may or may not be produced, but the sporulation-specific gene spo0A is present. Asaccharolytic; glucose, fructose and ribose can be fermented weakly. Able to cleave quercetin and other flavonoids. Exhibit reduced susceptibility to vancomycin. Major metabolic end products are acetic and butyric acids in TGY broth. Major cellular fatty acids are C14:0 and C16:0.
