Strictly anaerobic, non-motile, spore-forming rods. Ferment various sugars but not amino acids or aromatic compounds. Oxygen, nitrate, sulfate, thiosulfate, elemental sulfur, sulfite, anthraquinone-2,6-disulfonate, fumarate and Fe(III) nitrilotriacetate do not serve as electron acceptors for growth.
