General information
Description and emendation
Straight tapered rods, ca. 0.8 μm × 2-3 μm, occuring mostly in pairs or short chains. Gram-negative, non-sporeforming. Murein (peptidoglycan) contains mesodiaminopimelic acid (m-A2mp direct type; variation A1γ). Motile by means of a single subpolar flagellum or a few lateral flagella. Obligately anaerobic. Chemoorganotrophic. Good growth depends on yeast extract or peptone and carbohydrate. Starch, casein and tributyrin are hydrolysed. Optimum growth in the thermophilic temperature range. Growth between pH 6.2 and 8.0. catalase and cytochromes are not present. Under an atmosphere of 80% N2 and 20% CO2, glucose is fermented to 2 mol acetic acid are not formed from hexoses. Small amounts of volatile acids, for instance propionic acid, may only be formed from complex substrates, e.g. yeast extract, peptone etc. G+C content of DNA is ca. 47 mol%.
1: The cellular characteristics have been adopted from the description of Acetomicrobium. Straight tapered rods, occurring mostly in pairs or short chains. Gram-negative, non-spore-forming. Motile by means of a single subpolar flagellum or a few lateral flagella. Obligatory anaerobic. Chemoorganotrophic. Good growth depends on yeast extract or peptone and carbohydrate. Optimum growth in the thermophilic temperature range. Catalase and cytochromes are not present. Under an atmosphere of 80% N2, and 20% CO2, glucose is fermented to acetate, CO2 and H2. G+C content of DNA is 47.3±4.2 mol%.
