Strictly anaerobic, mesophilic, non-spore-forming, Gram-stain-negative, motile, curved rods. Yeast extract is required for growth. Able to utilize carbohydrates, alcohols, lactate, pyruvate, fumarate and amino acids. Oxygen, nitrate, sulfate, sulfite, thiosulfate, elemental sulfur and Fe(III) nitrilotriacetate do not serve as electron acceptors for growth.
