Cells occur singly or in chains and have the ability to form aggregates. Motile. Gram-negative. No spores are formed. Growth is anaerobic. Cells are thermophilic and slightly halophilic. Able to ferment proteinous substrates, some single amino acids and a limited number of organic acids, but not sugars, fatty acids or alcohols. Able to reduce cystine and elemental sulfur to hydrogen sulfide.
