General information
Description and emendation
Cells are oval rods (0.6-0.8 µm in diameter and 1.2-1.8 µm in length), Gram-negative and non-motile. Spores are not formed. Strictly anaerobic chemoorganorroph. Growth occurs in media that contain yeast extract and any of a variety of peptones. Pyridinediols (both 2,3 and 3,4 dihydroxy compounds) as well as arginine and histidine are fermented and ammonia is produced. Indole is not produced, nitrate is not reduced, and carbohydrates are not fermented. Cellular fatty acid profiles are dominated by straight- and branched-chain, saturated and unsaturated odd-carbon fatty acids, including 17- and 19-carbon monounsaturates, a 20-carbon cyclopropane acid, and straight- and branched-chain 3-hydroxy acids of 15 carbons. Comparison of the sequence of 16S rRNA from strain 78-1 with those from a large data base of diverse anaerobes indicated that this organism is not closely related to other bacteria, including those that are predominant members of ruminal populations. The only known habitat is the rumen. The type strain was isolated from the rumen of a goat in Hawaii, but the organism is also capable of colonizing the rumen of cattle. The organism is not ubiquitous in rumen populations, but definite geographic limits to its distribution have been shown. The DNA G+C content is 58 mol% (Tm).
