The class Chitinophagia belongs to the phylum Bacteroidetes. It was circumscribed on the basis of the phylogenetic analyses of the 16S rRNA and 23S rRNA genes, and the MLSA of 29 proteins. The class includes the order Chitinophagales, which is the type order of the family.
