Chitinophagales Munoz et al. 2017
General information
Description and emendation
The order Chitinophagales belongs to the class Chitinophagia. It was circumscribed according to phylogenies of the 16S rRNA gene, 23S rRNA gene and MLSA of 29 orthologous gene products. It belongs to the class Chitinophagia and encompasses the families Saprospiraceae and Chitinophagaceae, the latter of which is the type family of the order. Members are Gram-negative rods, often filamentous. Aerobes or facultative anaerobes. The Chitinophagaceae members may exhibit motility by swarming, have limited fermenting capabilities and often form yellow colonies, whereas the Saprospiraceae may show gliding motility, helical morphology and pink, orange or yellow pigments.
1: Currently encompasses only the family Chitinophagaceae. This change was necessary due to the removal of Saprospiraceae from the order Chitinophagales.
