Cells stain Gram-negative, motile by means of flagella, facultative or obligate anaerobic growth, vibrioid- to spiral-shaped. Major fatty acids are C18:1 ω7c, C18:1 ω7c 11-methyl and C16:0. Q-10 and MK-10 are the major quinones. Their natural habitats are hypersaline environments, such as solar salterns. Currently, the family comprises the single phototrophic genus Rhodothalassium, which is the type genus. The DNA G+C content ranges from 60.0 to 62.8 mol%.
