Gallionellaceae Henrici and Johnson 1935 (Approved Lists 1980)
General information
Description and emendation
Stalked bacteria, the long axis of the rod-shaped cells being set at right angles to the axis of the stalks. Stalks are slender, twisted bands, dichotomously branched, composed of ferric hydroxide. Multiplication of cells by transverse binary fission. Growing in iron-bearing waters.
1: This family is re-defined following the circumscribing of members of the Sulfuricellaceae to this family on the basis of pairwise 16S rRNA gene sequence similarities. Comprises iron-oxidizing bacteria and sulfur-oxidizing bacteria, now circumscribing members of Sulfuricellaceae - contains the genera Gallionella , Ferriphaselus, Sulfuricella, Sulfurirhabdus and Sulfuriferula. Oxidase-variable and catalase-negative. Motile organisms are monotrichous. Cells vary from rod-shaped to reniform with stalks. Metabolism is heterotrophic, autotrophic and/or mixotrophic. Obligately respiratory using oxygen or nitrate as terminal electron acceptors. Possess UQ-8 as the dominant respiratory quinone. G+C contents are generally around 50-70 mol%. Autotrophic genera use molecular hydrogen, reduced sulfur or ferrous iron as electron donors, the latter producing stalks thought to be ferric-iron-based. Many members contain hydroxylated saturated fatty acids as major components.
