Desulfuromonadaceae corrig. Kuever et al. 2006
General information
Description and emendation
The family comprises rod-shaped and curved cells. Strictly anaerobic chemolithoheterotrophs or chemoorganotrophs with a respiratory or fermentative type of metabolism. Sulfur or ferric iron can act as electron acceptors for some members and are reduced to sulfide and ferrous iron, respectively. Sulfate, sulfite, and thiosulfate are not used. Simple organic compounds such as long-chain fatty acids and alcohols serve as electron donors and carbon sources. Organic substrates are completely oxidized to CO2. All members are mesophilic; thermophiles have not been isolated. Cells of most members contain various cytochromes and menaquinones. Mesophilic species have been isolated from various aquatic environments, including marine, brackish water, and freshwater habitats. The family includes the genera Desulfuromonas and Desulfuromusa, Malonomonas, and Pelobacter.
1: The family includes the genera Desulfuromonas, Desulfuromusa, Malonomonas, Pelobacter and Geoalkalibacter. The type genus is Desulfuromonas.
