Original Description

The family Hafniaceae contains the type genus Hafnia and the genera Edwardsiella and Obesumbacterium. Members are catalase-positive, oxidase-negative, and negative for lysine decarboxylase. These bacteria are also able to grow on MacConkey media, and are capable of reducing nitrate. Members of the family Hafniaceae form a distinct monophyletic cluster in genome- and multi-gene-based phylogenetic trees and can be distinguished from all other bacteria by four conserved signature indels in the proteins two-component system response regulator GIrR, glucose-1-phosphate adenylyltransferase, transcriptional activator NhaR, and the hybrid sensor histidine kinase/response regulator.
