The family is defined mainly by distinct clustering of the genus Thorsellia in the phylogenetic tree based on nearly full-length 16S rRNA gene sequences. Members of the order are characterized by a low DNA G+C content of around 35%, a fatty acid profile dominated by C18:1 ω7c, C16:0 and C14:0, and ubiquinone Q-8 as the predominant isoprenoid quinone.
