The order Acidithiobacillales was circumscribed for this volume on the basis of phylogenetic analysis of 16S rDNA sequences; the order contains the families Acidithiobacillaceae and Thermithiobacillaceae. Autotrophs utilizing reduced sulfur compounds; mesophilic or moderately thermophilic.
