Description and emendation
Original Description
expand / minimize
The order comprises one family so far, Desulfarculaceae. The properties of the order and the family resemble the description given for the genus and the only described species, Desulfarculus baarsii. Even though this species shares nutritional features (utilization of fatty acids) with several other sulfate-reducing bacteria, a separate order is established to account for the deep phylogenetic branching within the Deltaproteobacteria.
