Original Description

The phylum Armatimonadetes is defined on a phylogenetic basis by comparative 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis of strain YO-36T (=NBRC 105658T =DSM 23562T; GenBank accession no. AB529679) and other cultures (strains P488 and T49; GenBank accession nos AM749768 and AM749780, respectively) and uncultured representatives from various terrestrial and aquatic habitats including thermophilic environments such as hot springs and geothermal soils. Common phenotypic features of the three cultured strains are non-motile Gram-negative cells, pinkish pigment production, oligotrophy and the ability to degrade polysaccharides.
