Description and emendation
Cells are non-motile, Gram-negative rods or filaments that occur singly or in pairs. Gas vesicles and helical or ring-shaped cells are not formed. Metabolism is strictly aerobic and chemoheterotrophic. Strains are catalasepositive. Non-agarolytic. Strains possess orange or yellow carotenoid pigments, but flexirubin pigments are absent. Strains may require sodium ions for growth and require yeast extract when grown in defined mineral-salts media. Psychrotolerant, with growth occurring between -2 and 25°C: optimal growth at about 20°C but no growth at 30°C (on agar media). Major fatty acids are i15:1 ω10c, a15:1 ω10c, a15:0, i15:0, i16:1 ω6c, i17:1 ω5c, a17:1 ω7c and 3-OH i16:0. Member of the family Flavobacteriaceae, order Cytophagales.
1: Oxidase-negative. Filamentous or helical cells may occur in some species. Some species grow between 4 and 40°C: optimal growth occurs at approximately 25°C. The major fatty acids are anteiso-C15:0 and iso-C15:0. The DNA G+C contents are in the range 33.5-39.1 mol%.
2: Gliding motility is present or absent, flexirubin production is variable, oxidase reaction is positive or negative. The genomic G+C content varies around 37%. This change was necessary due to the inclusion of the Vitellibacter species in Aequorivita.
