Capnocytophaga Leadbetter et al. 1982
General information
Description and emendation
Capnocytophaga, an eater in carbon dioxide. Single, short or elongate flexible rods or filaments, not branched, sheathed or helical. Cells 0.42-0.6 by 2.5-5.7 μm with round or tapered ends. Resting stages not known. Motile by gliding. Gram-negative. Chemoorganotrophs: Metabolism is fermentative; acetate and succinate are the major acidic end products. One or more polysaccarides such as dextan, glycogen, inulin or starch may be fermented; neither agar nor cellulose are fermented or decomposed. Organic growth factors appear to be required. Cell masses yellow or slightly pink. Facultative anaerobes; grow anaerobically, or in air-carbon dioxide (5-10%, v/v), but not in air. Catalase and oxidase negative. Benzidine-positive. The G+C content of the DNA of the species examined ranges from 33-41 mol%.
