Description and emendation
Original Description
expand / minimize
Gram negative. The cells are generally rodlike, 1 to 4 μm long, and 0.5 μm wide. May form filaments up to 50 μm long, which fragment into shorter cells. As the cultures age, cells become progressively shorter, with nonrefractile, coccoid cells that are 0.5 to 2.0 km in diameter eventually predominating. Ring-shaped, coiling, and helical cells are not formed. Gliding motility. Requires seawater and an organic nitrogen source (i.e., L-glutamate) for growth. Yellow carotenoid pigments are formed. Flexirubin pigments are absent. Strictly aerobic chemoheterotroph. The major cellular lipids are i15:1ω10c, a15:1ω10c, i15:0, a15:0, 15:0, i16:1 ω6c, i16:0, 16:1 ω7c, and a17:1 ω7c.
