Psychroserpens Bowman et al. 1997
General information
Description and emendation
Gram negative. Morphology varies with the age of the culture. Young cultures contain rodlike or vibrioid cells that are 2 to 6 µm long and 0.5 to 0.6 µm wide, and coiled and helical filamentous cells up to 20 µm long also frequently occur. Cells in older cultures eventually transform into nonrefractile, coccoid cells that are 0.5 to 2.0 µm in diameter. Nonmotile. Requires seawater, yeast extract, and/or vitamins for growth. Psychrophilic. Yellow carotenoid pigments are formed. Flexirubin pigments are absent. Strictly aerobic chemoheterotroph. The major cellular lipids are iC15:1 ω10c, aC15:1 ω10c, iC15:0, aC15:0, C15:1 ω11c, C15:1 ω4c, C15:0, and iC16:1 ω11c.
1: Cells are nonmotile or motile by gliding. The major polar lipids are PE, two unidentified amino-group-containing lipids, one unidentified phospholipid and two unidentified lipids.
