L. n. <i>sedimen</i> -<i>inis</i>, sediment; L. masc. suff. -<i>cola</i> (from L. n. <i>incola</i>), an inhabitant; N.L. masc. n. <i>Sediminicola</i>, an inhabitant of sediment, referring to the source of the strains.

Gram-negative, aerobic, rod-shaped, non-motile cells. Produces golden-yellow-coloured carotenoid pigments. Flexirubin-type pigments are not produced. Predominant cellular fatty acids are iso-C15:0, α-C15:0, iso-C15:1, iso-C17:1 ω9c, iso-C17:0 3-OH and summed feature 3 (C16:1 ω7c/iso-C15:0 2-OH). The DNA G+C content of the type species is in the range 38-40 mol%.
