N.L. neut. n. <i>Clostridium</i>, a bacterial genus; L. suff. -<i>oides</i> (from Gr. suff. -<i>eides</i>, from Gr. n. <i>eidos</i>, that which is seen, form, shape, figure), resembling, similar; N.L. neut. n. <i>Clostridioides</i>, organism similar to <i>Clostridium</i>.

Cells are Gram-positive staining, strictly anaerobic rods. Usually motile and produce spores. Abundant gas is produced in PYG broth. A range of straight and branched chain saturated and unsaturated fatty acids are produced. Acetic, isobutyric, butyric, isovaleric, valeric, isocaproic, formic and lactic acids are the products from PYG fermentation. Diagnostic diamino acid of the peptidoglycan is meso-DAP.
