Cells are Gram-stain-positive, rod-shaped, mesophilic and produce endospores. Cells are motile and multiply by binary fission. Catalase-negative and oxidase-negative. Obligate anaerobes that grow on a number of organic substrates. Growth factors and NaCl are not required for growth. The fatty acid C19:0 cyclo ω8c is present in minor amounts together with other C12 to C18 branched and unbranched fatty acids. Five phospholipids (diphosophatidylglycerol, phosphatidylglycerol, phosphotidylcholine, phosphatidylethanolamine and phosphatidylinositol) and two amino lipids (unidentified) are present. Some species are pathogens.
