Cells are Gram-stain-positive, rod-shaped and produce endospores. Mesophilic. Cells are motile and multiply by binary fission. Catalase-negative and oxidase-negative. Obligate anaerobes that grow on a number of organic substrates. Growth factors and NaCl are not required for growth. C16:0 is the major fatty acid, and C18:0, C18:1 ω7c C17:0, C16:1 ω9c and iso-C16:0 are the minor fatty acids. Indole and H2S production, NO3 reduction, starch and gelatin hydrolysis, and benzoate utilization vary with species. Cells contain diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylethanolamine, phosphatidylcholine and unidentified amino lipids as the polar lipids. Antimicrobials are produced. The DNA G+C content is 27-30.2 mol%.
