Microvirga Kanso and Patel 2003
General information
Description and emendation
Strictly aerobic, small, rod-shaped cells that stain Gram-negative and produce light-pink colonies. The optimum temperature for growth is 41°C, with a temperature range for growth between 25 and 45°C. Does not grow on glucose but uses xylose. Reduces nitrate to nitrite. Cells are susceptible to antibiotics that inhibit members of domain Bacteria. Bacteriochlorophyll is absent but carotenoids are present. PHB is produced. Thiosulfate does not stimulate growth. The G+C content of the type species is 63.5±0.5 mol%.
1: Strictly aerobic, small, rod-shaped cells that stain Gram-negative and produce light-pink colonies. The optimum temperature for growth is 37-41°C, with a temperature range for growth between 16 and 45°C. Grows with or without glucose but uses xylose. Reduces nitrate to nitrite. Cells are susceptible to antibiotics that inhibit members of domain Bacteria. Bacteriochlorophyll is absent but carotenoids are present. PHB is produced. Thiosulfate does not stimulate growth. The G+C content of the DNA is 63-65 mol%.
2: The temperature range for growth is 10-45°C. Positive for catalase, but negative for hydrolysis of casein, chitin, CM-cellulose and xanthine, indole production, glucose fermentation and arginine dihydrolase. The G+C content of the DNA is 61.5-64.3 mol%. The predominant isoprenoid quinone is Q-10. The major fatty acid is C18:1 ω7c. The polar lipids consist of phosphatidylcholine and phosphatidylethanolamine as major components and phosphatidylmonomethylethanolamine, phosphatidyldimethylethanolamine, diphosphatidylglycerol and phosphatidylglycerol in moderate amounts.
3: Contains moderate amounts of phosphatidyldimethylethanolamine or phospholipid. Some strains are capable of nodulation and symbiotic nitrogen fixation with legumes.
4: Nitrate reduction is variable. The major fatty acids contain C18:1 ω7c and/or C19:0 cyclo ω8c. The genome size and DNA G+C content are 3.53–9.63 Mb and 61.1–65.1 mol%, respectively.
