Form motile, rod-shaped cells that stain Gram-negative. Endospores are not formed. Facultatively chemolithoorganotrophic, strictly aerobic, oxidase-positive and catalase-positive. Bchl a is not present. Major fatty acids are straight-chain saturated and unsaturated fatty acids including hydroxy derivatives; major phospholipids are phosphatidylcholine, phosphatidylethanolamine, diphosphosphatidylglycerol and phosphatidylglycerol; ubiquinone 10 is the major respiratory quinone. Thiosulfate is oxidized to sulfate. Organic compounds serve as carbon and energy sources.
