Gram negative, sparsely peritrichously flagellated, sometimes motile rods. Culture free of the cytoplasm of Paramecium unknown. Some reports that a slow acting toxin is produced which paralyzes sensitive Paramecium, but no strains presently available show toxicity. G+C content unknown.
