Description and emendation
Rhodovarius forms short rod-shaped cells on solid agar media that stain Gram negative. Mesophilic. Strictly aerobic, cytochrome oxidase and catalase positive. bacteriochlorophyll a is not present during growth in the light and in the dark in the presence of oxygen. Carotenoids are present. High amounts of cyclo fatty acids (C19:0 cyclo ω8c and C17:0 cyclo) are present. The remaining fatty acids are straight-chained, a ubiquinone Q-10, is the major respiratory quinone. The polar lipid profile consists of the predominant compounds phosphatidyl ethanolamine, phosphatidyl dimethylethanolamine, phosphatidyl glycerol, phosphatidyl cholin and an unknown amino lipid. Additionally, minor amounts of phosphatidylmonomethylethanolamine, an unknown aminolipid and several unidenfied polar lipids are present as well. The major polyamine is spermidine. Organotrophic. Sugars are not utilized.
