Ideonella Malmqvist et al. 1994
General information
Description and emendation
Gram-negative, mesophilic, straight or slightly curved asporogenous rods, 0.7-1.0 × 2.5-5.0 μm in size. Motile by two or several polar or subpolar flagella. Do not produce prosthecae. No resting stages are known. Aerobic, having a strictly respiratory type of metabolism, with oxygen as terminal electron acceptor; chlorate but not sulphate can be used as an alternative electron acceptor, allowing growth to occur anaerobically. Chlorate is reduced to chloride. Cytochrome c-oxidase positive. Catalase weakly positive. Chemoorganotrophic, utilizing organic acids, amino acids and carbohydrates as sole carbon sources. Lipolytic and proteinolytic. The DNA base composition is 68 mol% G+C (HPLC).
1: According to the original description, members of the genus are able to grow anaerobically by reducing chlorate to chloride. However, Ideonella azotifigens 1a22T is unable to grow via reduction of chlorate. As a result, chlorate reduction is not a distinguishing characteristic of the genus. In addition, the cellular fatty acids of Ideonella were not given in the original genus description. Major cellular fatty acids are C16:1 cis-9 and C16:0. The hydroxy fatty acids include C10:0 3-OH, C12:0 2-OH and C12:0 3-OH, with the latter two fatty acids being diagnostic for Ideonella among species of related genera.
