Description and emendation
Original Description
expand / minimize
Gram-negative, non-spore forming flagellar rods that are aerobic or facultatively anaerobic. Cells test positive for indole, catalase and glucose fermentation, and negative for oxidase and arginine dihydrolase. Members of this genus form a monophyletic clade in phylogenetic trees based on large subsets of conserved proteins, with the Kosakonia genus as its closest phylogenetic neighbour. Species within this genus can be distinguished from all other bacteria by two conserved signature indels in the outer membrane assembly protein AsmA and the intracellular growth protein IgaA.
