N.L. fem. n. <i>Ahniella</i>, named in honour of microbiologist Tae-young Ahn, for his contributions to environmental microbiology and microbial ecology in South Korea.

Cells are Gram-stain-negative, non-motile, aerobic and rod-shaped. Cells occur either singly or in aggregate. The predominant fatty acids are iso-C16:0, iso-C15:0 and summed feature 9 (iso-C17:1 ω9c and/or 10-methyl C16:0). The respiratory quinone is Q-8 and the major polar lipids are PDE, PG, DPG and PME.
