Cells are Gram-stain-negative, straight or slightly curved rods. Mesophilic and thermophilic, obligate anaerobes. Cellulose is typically utilized as sole carbon and energy source. Cellulosome is produced during cellulose degradation. The genomic size ranges from 3.6 to 6.2 Mb, and G+C content ranges from 30 to 41 mol%. The type species of the genus is Hungateiclostridium thermocellum.
